Summer Junior Sailing
The cornerstone of CSYC's youth sailing is its summer Junior Sailing Program. Established over five decades ago, the program has provided summer sailing to hundreds if not thousands of local area sailors, both club members and non-club members alike. Over the years many highly accomplished collegiate and nationally ranked sailors began their sailing in CSYC's Junior Sailing Program. Most notably today is former CSYC junior sailor & junior sailing instructor, Mike Rehe. Mike is currently a top ranked US Match Racing Sailor who is a member of Taylor Canfield’s USONE Team. Currently they are ranked #1 in on the Alpari Match Racing tour. Mike sails year round throughout the world and is a testament to the quality of grass roots instruction he received at CSYC and from others in the DRYA sailing community.
Over the years, CSYC's Junior Sailing Program has grown from 25 junior sailors, to over 100. At present, we offer two distinct and separate programs: Recreational Sailing and Racing.
While the overall goal of each program is the same – fun, learning, success – the Monday-Thursday discipline of each program is vastly different…
Fleet Racing -- CSYC's Racing Program consists of three one-design classes – Opti, 420, Laser- with daily drills and education plans designed for the competitive one-design racing sailor. Racing sailors compete regularly throughout the summer in DRYA and other racing regattas.
Team Racing is geared for those who sail in High School and/or aspire to sail in college. Because this venue is very specific, our Team Racing Coaches are college racing sailors who compete in team racing at a high level.
Recreational Sailing -- While in many cases, juniors who begin in recreational sailing transition into the Racing Program, the Recreational Sailing Program's focus is separate and distinct. Recreational sailors learn how to sail a variety of boats (Optis, Flying Scots), all in a relaxed, fun, camp-like atmosphere.
Fun Fridays -- On Fridays (we call them “Fun Fridays”), the two classes combine, switching crews, skippers and boats, so everyone has a chance to try sailing something different. Last year, we added a Hobie Racing Cat to this boat rotation -- which was a special treat and thrill for our juniors. Many have never seen, let alone sailed a multi-hull before and were thrilled to have a chance to sail on one!
